CAROLE LOMBARD CollectionCarole Lombard is one of film's most beloved stars. Some of this is due to her sad and untimely death at the age of 33 in a plane crash while selling war bonds. Mostly it is due to her stunning glamorous and elegant image. Her place in people's memory is not for a particular role or film or character -- it is for that image. Lombard was talented in both drama and comedy and with a good script and director, she excelled. Certainly, a few of her films are considered amongst the finest in the screwball comedy genre (TWENTIETH CENTURY, MY MAN GODFRY, NOTHING SACRED and TO BE OR NOT TO BE) and she made fine dramatic impressions in MADE FOR EACH OTHER and IN NAME ONLY. She exhibited great charisma and she appealed to most everyone because while she could be stunningly beautiful, glamorous and elegant she also seemed down to earth and real, and bawdy. In real life she definitely was--- not only bawdy, but known to be quite salty and uninhibited. This gave her the sense of fun she exhibited in the great comedies. She was born in Indiana in 1908, her parents divorced in 1916 and her mother brought the family to California. Carol (as she spelled her chosen stage name), born Jane Alice Peters was chosen for a film at age 12 (A PERFECT CRIME). She continued school in Los Angeles and attempted to get more acting jobs. At 16 she decided to leave school and pursue acting. She got her feet wet in films by playing leading ladies in westerns and secondary roles and in a series of Mack Sennett slap stick comedies (her training ground). She paid her dues and worked her way up. An auto accident at 17 left her face scarred and Fox canceled her contract. Barbaric plastic surgery repaired her face but she always had to use generous make up to cover her scars. She married William Powell in 1931 (having made MAN OF THE WORLD together), but the marriage only lasted two years. She always felt him to be film's finest actor. She would receive an Academy Award nomination for best actress for her classic film with Powell, MY MAN GODFRY. A relationship with NO MAN OF HER OWN co star Clark Gable would start in 1937 with marriage in 1939. They were Hollywood's golden couple. Lombard was highly respected by the Hollywood community and by the American public and did all she could to assist in the war effort as America went to war in 1941. She lost her life early on in that effort, just weeks after America's entrance into the war. On Jan. 16, 1942, the plane she was traveling back to Los Angeles in after a tour of selling war bonds crashed in the Nevada mountains. Her now classic Ernst Lubitsch film TO BE OR NOT TO BE was released posthumously.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS (1930)

This was Carole Lombard's second film for Paramount during a period in which she was quickly moved from one film to the next. This musical banked on the new popularity of Buddy Rogers who emerged from the late silent ear as a talent with musical abilities. The story is about a naïve youth who is sent to live with three chorus girls who must act as his chaperon until he turns 21 (at which point he will inherit 25 million). For this duty, they are each paid 10 thousand dollars. This gave opportunity for all kinds of pre-code action, as evidenced in the bulk of stills of the three girls and their friends parading in lingerie at every opportunity. Lombard certainly partakes in this parade and this collection contains some of the rarest and most revealing images of her in any film. Great fashions, art deco furnishings and sets and very risqué images.
All 50 stills feature Carole Lombard. 80% are stamped by Gene Richee including the 5 portraits of Lombard. Excellent condition.

I TAKE THIS WOMAN (1931)

Story about a rich socialite whose father sends her to a dude ranch in the west to cool off. She falls in love with a cowboy and her family disinherits her. This forgotten film featured Carole Lombard with Gary Cooper for the first time, when both were at their youthful peak. Until recently, this was a lost film, the rights reverting to the author who received the original negative and allowed it to disintegrate. One 16mm acetate print was discovered, and this is what we now have left of the film.
Both stars appear in each of the stills. Excellent condition.

NO MAN OF HER OWN (1932)

A legendary film, for the pairing of stars Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. The film is a rather offbeat genre of comedy and drama and reflects much of the open attitude of the time towards relationships and sexuality, an attitude which at the height of the depression made sense but which was quickly reigned in by the religious sector. Lombard plays a lonely girl with a wild streak who works as a librarian. On the toss of a coin she marries a gambler, who once she discovers his true nature attempts to get him to quit. He does his best to go straight. Gable and Lombard met while making this film and though a relationship was established and chemistry was present, they did not really start a romance until a few years later. Gable was on loan out from MGM, where he was just establishing himself as a leading male star. There are numerous sexy images of these great charismatic stars.

Lombard is in every still but the 1 Gable portrait. Most are double weight key book stills. A couple stills have some border smudging. Otherwise excellent condition.

FROM HELL TO HEAVEN (1933)

A quickie production which borrowed the successful story format (though not all star cast idea) of MGM's big hit GRAND HOTEL. Residents of a resort hotel await the outcome of a horse race, as it will affect each of their lives in different ways.

EAGLE AND THE HAWK (1933)

Paramount Production 934.

A fine, though underrated story about the volunteer Royal Air Force squadron during WWI which starred Frederic March, Cary Grant and Jack Oakie. Carole Lombard's role was as "The Beautiful Lady," a character which she could play to the hilt and which encompassed her contribution to the script. In these stills the beautiful Lombard wears an outrageous gown with very low décolletage , having all to do with pre-code 1933 Hollywood and nothing to do with 1917 England!

There is a portrait still and one of Lombard with Frederic March. Excellent condition.

SUPERNATURAL (1933)

A bizarre tale of a murderess (Lombard) who's spirit takes control over another woman's! Lombard is seen in the stills with Randolph Scott, Vivienne Osborne, Aline Dinehart and H.B. Warner. Though not credited, Lombard's black evening gowns are likely designed for her by Travis Banton.

HANDS ACROSS THE TABLE (1935)

Story of a cynical gold digging manicurist who meets a wounded aviator whose family has lost their fortune. Both wish to marry money, but form an alliance in that pursuit instead. Film, from director Mitchell Liesen included a combination of comedy elements from slapstick to screwball. So successful was Carole Lombard's comic teaming with Fred MacMurray, that they went on to make three more films together. Travis Banton was at last credited on screen for Lombard's stunning wardrobe.

Story of a girl on vacation in Panama who agrees to go on a date with a soldier on his last day in the army. She misses her shop back to the US and must stay with him and his friend. Romance ensues. In these stills, Lombard appears in a show girl costume designed by Travis Banton which went as far as it could in post code 1935 Hollywood.

P1724-304, 313 and 325- Lombard's party at Venice Pier fun house, for A. C. Blumenthal and William Rhinelander Stewart. Guests included in the stills are Josephine Hutchinson, Frances Drake, Marlene Dietrich, Lili Damita and Errol Flynn. These are double weight keybook stills with typed blurbs on the verso. They are also stamped approved by the Hollywood advertising council, June 19, 1935. (7)

CLARA BOW CollectionPresented is a collection of 507 original 8 x 10 single weight glossy silver gelatin prints from the Paramount Studios wardrobe collection.

Born into poverty in 1905 Brooklyn New York and coming from a very difficult background Clara Bow became a superstar, and the first ever Hollywood sex symbol. Clara could flirt with the camera just by looking into it with her big brown eyes and mischievous bow-tie grin. She exuded sex appeal from every pore in her little body and was not afraid to flaunt it. She personified "flaming youth in rebellion". Her characters were always working class gals; manicurists, showgirls and the like. Her movies did a lot to emancipate young Americans from the restrictive Victorian morals their parents had been raised with. Clara's characters were unashamed about being attracted to men and went after them with gusto. Her shop girl in It (1927), sees the bosses son one day, and says "Oh Santa, gimme him!" She knows exactly what to do to get him interested and then keeps him on his toes. Her characters cut their dresses up to look sexier, cut off their hair, drank and smoked in public, and danced all night long. At the height of her career, she received 45,000 fan letters a week, a record that has never been equaled. She was the idol of working girls and the dream of working class guys everywhere.

Unfortunately, Paramount studios saw little value in their inventory of silent film history and once an interest in it came about, much of the libraries nitrate film negative and extant prints had disintegrated. With the renewed interest in Clara Bow, there has been a campaign to find and restore as many of her films as possible. Many are extant, but a handful are not. This title, unfortunately is one of those lost films.

Presented here, in still photo form is likely the finest and most complete run of stills for this title. This would constitute an archival recreation of the storyline of the film and is the only known visual continuity extant for this purpose. This set of stills came from the Paramount Wardrobe Department.

Clara played a spirited girl (Rosie O' Reilly) who meets a known boxer, develops her own cabaret boxing/dancing act. She meets a wealthy man while entertaining in the club which inspires her to take etiquette lessons so as she can "crash" society. In the end, however, she decides to return to her boxer boyfriend. Reed Howes was her boxer boyfriend. B. P Shulberg, who brought Clara from Brooklyn and made her a film star, produced this as well as many of her film vehicles. Clara made this film during early 1927, just having finished IT. She would next film HULA.

Hula (1927)

HULA was set on a pineapple plantation in Hawaii with Clara playing Hula Calhoun the high spirited daughter of the plantation owner. Hula sets her sites on winning over a British engineer who is married. Hula does not let that get in her way however! The film opened with Clara performing a nude swim in a brook and was very controversial during it's time. Bow also performed a grass skirt dance and frolicked on horseback over the island set. The movie was likely filmed, in parts in the Catalina Island area and was directed by Clara Bow's favorite (and with whom she had an affair), Victor Fleming. Clive Brook plays the leading man and is in many of the stills with Clara. Albert Gran is her father and Patricia Dupont plays Brooks surprise wife. Also Olympic legend Duke Kahanamoku is featured in the Hawaiian dancing sequence and appears in those stills. This is the most complete archive of original scene stills ever gathered for this rare title. This set is from the Paramount wardrobe files and many of the stills have typed on their verso side "Ladies wardrobe, Frank Richardson." A few also have the Paramount Ladies Wardrobe stamp on verso.

Story of a dance hall girl (Trixie "Peaches" Deane) who works as a dime-a-dance hostess at the Roseland Dance Hall who meets and falls in love with a sailor who is on leave. The sailor mis-interprets her job description, gets fresh and she gives him the boot. In the end, they discover they are really in love of course and he vows to return.

Unfortunately again, this is one of Clara Bow's lost films.

James Hall plays her boyfriend and Jack Oakie her buddy. Malcom St. Clair, who directed many of her films, directed this picture. It was made in summer 1928 with location shooting in San Francisco and San Pedro, CA.

Made in early 1929, this is Clara Bow's first talkie and was directed by the legendary Dorothy Arzner. Story of a wild college girl, and her wild girlfriends, who falls for a professor (Frederic March) which causes scandal. She proves herself decent when she takes the blame for another girl's misdeed and is expelled. The professor comes to her rescue.

Still 6 has original paper blurb attached to back which gives names of all the players in the still.

Saturday Night Kid (1929)

A great glimpse into life of the late 1920's, this early talkie left behind the typical Bow character and presented her in a subdued role. Story of two sisters who work in a department store. The younger sister is played by Jean Arthur in a very early lead role, she the unsympathetic character who stabs her sister in the back. Clara again appeared with James Hall as her leading man. Character actress Edna May Oliver plays the director of the stores charity pageant. Another sales girl is played by Jean Harlow in a very early role. She also partakes in the pageant, and wore the costume intended for Bow, as Bow had gained too much weight to fit in it. Harlow would take up the torch of movie sex symbol in the 1930's, and even make a film based on incidents of Bow's life, BOMBSHELL. Harlow appears in 3 of the stills of this set.

This is an extensive grouping of scene and publicity stills from this title, likely the most extensive to be offered in one collection. Many of the stills bear the photographers stamp of Eugene Richee. Several bear the photographers stamp of Clifton L. Kling.

Her Wedding Night (1930)

Clara Bow celebrated her 25th birthday on the set of this romantic comedy of errors. In this early talkie, she plays an American actress vacationing in Paris. Included in the scenes are Ralph Forbes, Charles Ruggles, Skeets Gallagher, Geneva Mitchell and Natalie Kingston. The film was recently restored and is noteworthy for it's art deco sets.

The portraits of Bow are stamped Gene Richee.

Clara had made the transition to early talkies and her thick Brooklyn accent added appeal to the characters she played. The microphone however filled her with great anxiety. There were several personal scandals during this time and her last few films in 1932 and 1933 failed. She experienced a mental breakdown. In 1932 she married cowboy film star Rex Bell, moved to his ranch and raised their two sons, never returning to film making.

IDA LUPINO CollectionIda Lupino, a legendary actress of Hollywood's Golden era who became not only an important but one of the very few women stars of that time who went on to become a recognized film director started life in Camberwell London, England, Feb. 4, 1914. She was the daughter of theatre couple Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Lupino. Her uncle was the popular Lupino Lane. At 19 she too entered films (she had played on small role in a 1931 British film) and appeared in 6 films in 1933. Her mother brought her to Hollywood in 1934 and her career was launched. This collection is a rare representation of that first year in Hollywood and is a very rare glimpse into the making of a star, under the old star contract system of the classic era of Hollywood. Seldom does a collection of this archival and historic quality come up for public sale. It is likely that this is the only near complete set of Lupino's first year of publicity photography at her home studio, Paramount and is not represented in any public or private archives.

Within the collection are portraits, her day to day life, events she attended, her star build up, fashion publicity and publicity for her very first films.

Ida learned her craft of film making during this initial year. Her progression in learning that is well documented as you move through these photos, dated from late 1933 to Spring 1935.

Lupino would go on to become a star actress at Warner Brothers after her initial 5 years as starlet/leading lady. She would become known for her tough characters with a heart of gold. She would become most well known as a brunette, letting go of her platinum dyed tresses--- so in vogue in 1934.

She is well revered as the only major woman star of the 1930's and 40's to become a well established film director of the 1950's (while continuing to act), and inspired many women film makers to this day.

LOUISE BROOKS CollectionA collection of 5 original single weight glossy silver gelatin prints. This set was originally housed in the Paramount Studios Women's Wardrobe department. Louise Brooks appeared in 24 films between 1925 and 1938. She was also a gifted dancer and an accomplished writer. Before she entered films, Louise performed with both the Denishawn Dance Co. and the Ziegfeld Follies. Later in life, her articles were collected into a bestselling book, LULU IN HOLLYWOOD. Today she is best known for her role as Lulu in the classic 1929 German film, PANDORA'S BOX. 70 years after her last films, Louise Brooks is remembered for her independent spirit, remarkable beauty and trademark hairstyle (cut in the same Buster Brown style she had worn as a child). These qualities have made her a 20th century icon.

NOW WE'RE IN THE AIR (1927)

Story is a comedy set in World War I about two American air pilots (Wallace Beery and Raymond Hackett) who stumble into a battle in France and emerge as heroes. Louise plays a girl named Griselle who they meet while in France. This stunning portrait is of Louise as the French country girl in provincial costume. Typed on the back is "Ladies wardrobe Frank Richardson," and it is stamped PHOTO BY RICHEE. There is a minor smudge in the top left blank white margin, otherwise mint condition.

CANARY MURDER CASE (1929)

Images for this extant, but rarely shown late silent/early talkie film are very rare. The film is famous for leading to the end of Louise Brooks's film career at Paramount. Made as a silent film, just as the industry was converting to talkies, it was decided that speaking scenes would be added after production wrapped. Louise Brooks had gone to Europe to work on what would become her best work (Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl) and legend has it, would not come in to shoot the added scenes and record dialogue.

In the murder mystery, based on a true case, Louise plays the Canary, a blackmailing nightclub singer. She is murdered 15 minutes into the story, which explains the lack of stills for her characters.

MARLENE DIETRICH CollectionA collection of 26 single weight glossy silver gelatin still images from two of Dietrich's finest 1930's Paramount films. As of late, there has been very strong collector interest in 30's images of Dietrich, and there are some truly magnificent ones here.

Between 1929 and 1935, Marlene Dietrich appeared in a series of films at Paramount for director Joseph von Sternberg. Von Sternberg began is relationship with Deitrich in 1929 when he went to Germany and cast her in his film THE BLUE ANGEL, a joint venture between UFA and Paramount. She became his Trilby to his Svengali. With determination, she sought to work with other directors. SONG OF SONGS is the one film she made during this tenure for another director, the gifted Rouben Mamoulian.

This was the story of an innocent country girl (Lily) who goes to live in the city with her aunt. Dietrich was able to convey the growth from naive girl to a woman of experience and disillusionment in one of her finest performances of the time. Risque was the theme and the nude statue for which she posed (legend has it that she did indeed pose
for it!).

Desire (1936)

This is the first film which Marlene Dietrich completed after her Svengali years with Von Sternberg. A departure from the heavy melodrama's she had starred in for 6 years, this was a romantic comedy. She was re-united with her MOROCCO co star Gary Cooper and again the pair exuded sexual chemistry which burned up the nitrate film--- post code ethics made things less blatant, but plenty of "desire" was displayed nonetheless. Travis Banton clothes Dietrich is some of her most flattering contemporary gowns and costume pieces, which these stills display. Dietrich's crew of Paramount technicians followed her through and did her as much justice as in the Von Sternberg period. Without the heave artifice, Dietrich was allowed to be more free and shine on her own. This is the story of a lady jewel thief in Paris, who meets and engineer and must flea the country before she is caught. Some of the finest images of Dietrich, including still 9 which was used for a lobby card, and on the cover of the book FOYER PLEASURE. Though Frank Borzage is credited director, some of the film was directed by Ernst Lubitsch which may explain both Dietrich and Cooper's effervescent handling of the material in what is very much a Lubitsch "touched" effort.
