BLACKWELL’S ISLAND (1939)

Vintage original 8 x 10” (20 x 25 cm.) silver gelatin still photo, U. S. John Garfield, Rosemary Lane, Dick Purcell, Victor Jory, dir: William C. McGann; Warner Brothers. Montage style portrait of John Garfield as news reporter Tim Raydon set against an image of the prisoner’s of New Yorks’ Blackwell’s Island prison. The film was based on a true story which took place at this prison in 1934 involving a reporters breaking up of an organized crime racket taking place inside the prison. 1939 was the year in which Warner Brothers promoted John Garfield to star status.
