ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1933)

Vintage original 5 ½ x 8 ¾” (14 x 22 cm.) herald poster, U.S. Charles Laughton, Bela Lugosi, Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams, Kathleen Burke; dir: Erle C. Kenton; Paramount. One of the classic horror titles from the early 1930’s, pre- production code era. Significantly featured in the art is Kathleen Burke as the Panther Woman. Story adapted from H. G. Wells, of an obsessed scientist (Charles Laughton as Dr. Moreau) who conducts experiments in evolution and has set himself up on a remote island as a demigod, controlling a community of mutated half humans. His most successful and evolved experiment, the Panther Woman, realizes she can escape her mad creator when a group from the outside world are marooned on the Island. Laughton’s brutal and realistic portrayal as the insane Moreau continue to make this film truly horrifying. Bela Lugosi gives one of his finest performances as an unrecognizable half man/half animal creature, highlighted by his plaintive plea, “Are we not men?” It is nearly impossible to obtain an original piece for this title.
